FutureShop's Expert Review of the Tellurium Q Speaker Cables

This comprehensive review delves into the enigmatic world of Tellurium Q speaker cables, exploring their range and audio performance. Distinguished by three colour families—Blue, Black, and Silver—each offering unique sound characteristics, these cables are designed to enhance audio systems of varying qualities. Through in-depth testing with Billie Eilish's "Ocean Eyes," the review illustrates the cables' ability to elevate audio clarity, separation, and dynamics from the warm and cuddly Blue to the vibrant and detailed Silver Diamond. The review also touches on the secretive manufacturing process, suggesting a blend of technical innovation and mystical lore behind their exceptional performance. To read the full review, visit our blog.

What Tellurium Q say

Tellurium Q Black was Tellurium Q's first cable, and they knew they were on to something special when they took the prototypes to various dealers for their comments and input. One, in particular, would not believe it could match the thicker, more expensive cable in his demonstration system.

Tellurium Q sat down, and after listening to some tracks the dealer was familiar with, they swapped the cable for Tellurium Q Black. He sat forward, looked at Tellurium Q, and quite seriously asked what else they had done to his system while changing the cables. Only once he had swapped the cables himself, a couple of times, could he believe his ears. He immediately stocked the Tellurium Q Black. It is deceptively thin and it is small. By conventional thought it should not be able to do what it does and as well as it does it. That is why Tellurium Q has applied for a patent for one of the technological advances that facilitate its outstanding performance.

So why create Black II, despite its predecessor winning multiple awards, surprising owners with its performance, and more people than ever choosing to use it in their systems?

Tellurium Q have been learning and developing, and have developed ways to make this little gem even better. The only thing left to do was to give it to their customers. Switch Black for Black II, and the distinction is obvious. Once you hear the difference, it is also obvious why they felt compelled to upgrade Black in the way that they have.

We believe you will get more from your music, and hope that you love Black II as much as we do.

Contact Enhancer Option

To ensure the best possible connection between your system, Future Shop recommends the DeoxIT Gold G-Series contact enhancer.

DeoxIT Gold is carefully applied to the plug contacts of your cable and is a unique conditioning solution designed to improve conductivity and provide long-lasting protection on gold, base metals and other precious metal contacts and connections. DeoxIT Gold penetrates plated surfaces, molecularly bonding to the base metals to seal and protect both surfaces.

The benefits of applying DeoxIT gold are:

  • Improved Conductivity
  • Maintained optimum signal quality
  • Reduced wear & abrasion
  • Prevents fretting/dendrite corrosion
  • Forms a protective anti-tarnishing coating
  • Stabilises connections between similar and dissimilar metals
  • Reduces arcing, RFI and intermittent connections

Please select this option from the above ‘Contact Enhancer’ drop-down menu and our engineers will apply the contact solution to your cable connectors prior to shipping.

Tellurium Q Black II Pursuit of Perfect Systems Best Analogue Cable 2018 Award

"The Black II speaker cables are flexible, discrete, could easily fit under carpets or rugs and as such would be very easy to live with in nearly all domestic situations. They are a very light speaker cable and are therefore very well suited to use with book shelf speakers sitting on top of stands. All these often forgotten factors coupled with the overall sound quality at their price point are the reason I can happily award them Best Analogue Cable of 2018. They are a great introduction to what Tellurium Q are all about and if you like what these do, you will love what the other cables do higher up in the range."

Equipment Review - Hi-Fi World - June 2017

“Black II is a completely different cable than Black. .. The smoothness of this cable is unique. Looking at both cables, not knowing that you need to look for a Roman “double” on a black outer jacket, we would say that they are the same cables. But let’s listen to them with a few songs, it does not take much time to come to the conclusion that really big changes took place between the new and the old version.”

Wojciech Pacula - Hi Fidelity.pl

Tellurium Q Black II Hi-Fi Pig Recommended

“I changed to the Black II after a few tracks and was so flabbergasted by the improvement again that I didn’t bother going back to the Black.
It really was night and day. What struck me the most was how natural and clear the cable sounded with no nasties or obvious short comings. Now I know it can’t be perfect, and Geoff told me wait till you hear our pricier cables (oh dear), but I can’t remember hearing such a difference so easily, which makes my life a lot easier both as a reviewer and simply a listener. Isn’t that what good kit should be about.”

Ian Ringstead - HiFi Pig

Tellurium Q Black II Stereo Times Most Wanted Components

“This is definitely a big win for Tellurium Q’s Geoff Merrigan and company. To state it plainly; there is not a speaker cable that I have heard that comes close to the Black II’s performance and whose cost roughly translates to less than $150/meter. The cables are not big or thick but are built very nicely and come with your choice of bananas, spades or both.

Tellurium Q plays it close to the vest when it comes to technical information, but as far as sonics go, I was greatly impressed by their performance. I spent a lot of time crawling around between my speakers and amps, swapping them in and out and back in because I could not believe how well they performed. They performed equally as well on planar speakers as they did with dynamics. I found their sound to be smooth over-all, with an open and airy top-end, and with extended bass and a slightly warm midrange.”

Mike Wright - Stereo Times

About Tellurium Q Made in United Kingdom

Tellurium Q cables offer a unique approach to cable performance, focusing on minimising phase distortion, a common problem inherent in all cables. The Tellurium Q team understands that all signal path materials act as electronic filters, impacting the naturalness of vocals and overall audio quality.

Instead of ignoring this issue, Tellurium Q embraces it, and engineers cables that provide a clear path for the signal, aiming for the most natural sound possible with current technology. Their construction involves multiple stranded conductors of varying materials, dielectric materials, and geometries. Every detail, from solder mixes to plating thicknesses, is carefully considered.

Tellurium Q has developed three distinct families of sound to cater to different customer preferences: the Tellurium Q Silver range offers silver-like characteristics without harshness, the Tellurium Q Black range (including the Tellurium Q Black Diamond) provides transparent and lifelike reproduction, and the Tellurium Q Blue range adds a slight warmth to balance brighter systems. Each range is designed to enhance the audio experience uniquely. They strive to offer a clear, transparent, and natural listening experience and invite customers to hear the exceptional results of their work for themselves.

Enhance Your Experience: Free Cable Burn-In Service with Nordost VIDAR Machine

Please take note of the following details regarding our cable burn-in service:

  • Cable Compatibility: We regret to inform you that we cannot burn-in cables with stripped bare ends or BFA plugs. In order for cables to undergo the burn-in process, they should be terminated or have connectors.
  • Timing: Cables will be burnt in for the selected period after processing your order. For custom-length cables, the burn-in process will occur after they have been terminated by the manufacturer or our engineers unless specified otherwise in the product description.
  • Availability: Future Shop provides our cable burn-in service free of charge, but its availability is at our discretion. While we strive to fulfil all burn-in requests for the specified time periods, please understand that during exceptionally busy periods, we may be unable to meet the demand due to limited connections on the Nordost Vidar cable conditioning machines.

The Nordost VIDAR cable burn-in machine integrates three key functions into one operation:

  1. Charge Neutralisation: It eliminates charges that accumulate around the cables and their insulation, ensuring a more balanced electrical environment.
  2. Deep Conditioning: The machine provides a wide band and deep conditioning process that affects the conductor core, resulting in changes to the signal transmission through the metal. This deep conditioning enhances the cable's performance.
  3. Ultrasonic Surface Conditioning: The VIDAR machine utilizes ultrasonic waves to condition the surface of the conductors, optimizing their contact and overall conductivity.

The VIDAR employs a proprietary combination of composite and complex signals to condition the cables. These signals comprise ultra-low and ultra-high frequencies, extending beyond the range of video frequencies. The signal moves back and forth along the cable, penetrating deep into the core with ultra-low frequencies and traversing the surface with ultra-high frequencies. This transmission method generates beat harmonics between the two complex waveforms, which permeate all layers of the cable. The circuitry of the VIDAR also drives electrons from the conductor into the insulation area, neutralizing electrical charges.

Nordost Vidar Burn-in Machine

So, what does this all mean for you?

The ultimate outcome of conditioning cables with the Nordost VIDAR is improved sound staging, increased detail, and an overall more musical presentation in your audio system.

Now, you may wonder why cable burn-in is necessary. During cable manufacturing, gasses become trapped as insulation is applied over the conductors. Additionally, new cables often possess high electrical charges, resulting in a brittle and bright sound that lacks the desired detail and depth for music production.

When cables undergo burn-in, the trapped gasses are dissipated, and small impurities in the conductor metals begin to exhibit diode-like behaviour, favouring current flow in a specific direction.

Here are the physical effects of the burn-in process:

  • Charge Neutralisation: The burn-in process neutralizes charges in the conductors and insulation, promoting a more balanced electrical environment.
  • Wide Bandwidth Frequencies: The conditioning affects how signals pass through the metal, enabling a wider range of frequencies to penetrate all cable layers.
  • Signal Transmission: The burn-in process establishes the directionality of the cable, optimizing signal transmission from one end to the other.

When cables are properly burnt in, you can expect the following audible changes in your audio system:

  • Fuller and Natural Sound: Your system should be capable of producing a more immersive and realistic performance with a fuller and more natural sound.
  • Increased Detail: You may notice enhanced details and nuances in the music, allowing you to perceive subtle elements that were previously hidden.
  • Improved Soundstage: The dimensionality of your system's soundstage can be greatly improved, creating a more spacious and immersive listening experience.

At Future Shop, our goal is to maximise your satisfaction. That's why we offer a free burn-in service on all our cables before they arrive at your door, enabling you to sit back and enjoy the benefits of properly conditioned cables in your audio system.

New speaker cables
12 Nov 2024
I'm really happy with these cables. They're beautifully made, and the product looks and sounds amazing.

They're a lovely complement to my leak stereo 130 amplifier, feeding Wharfedale Diamond 9.1 speakers on stands, which produce a deep, spacious, and clean sound.

All Good From Tellurium
14 Oct 2024
This is a very professional and high-quality product. It is flexible and not as wide as it looks in the pictures, but it looks good as well!

I replaced the old Chord Epic cable on the KEF Meta 1 speakers. Sound has opened up more and allows more clarity across the sound spectrum. The detail and depth certainly improved.

I had a 96-hour burn-in, which gives a more immediate assessment of their quality. It's an excellent product, and I would recommend it to anyone wanting an upgrade.

Superb customer service from Futureshop. Thanks

It arrived in less than 24 hours of ordering. It was nicely packaged in a box and much lighter and thinner than I was expecting.

Sound quality is very very good paired with my Tannoy floorstanding speakers and Lyngdorf 3400 amp.

Tellurium cables and Futureshop are both totally recommended.

Looking forwards to my Tellurium turntable cable arriving.

Excellent speaker cable that lets the music flow.

Having already used the Tellurium Q Black MK1 cables in an earlier system, I knew these cables would perform well. I could hear a clear improvement compared to MK2 cables, but their sonic character remained.

If you have a decent resolving system, are pretty happy with its tonal balance, and don't need to use speaker cables to further 'tune', then I can't recommend these cables enough. Excellent performance to price.

Robust stuff!

In all my 60 years of buying Hi-Fi, I have realised how important decent cables and interconnects are.

Describing Hi-Fi 'sound' can be like expounding on a decent claret - it can get pretentious.

I'm not going to get involved in that, other than to say the upgrade difference was noticeable and certainly good enough for my 75-year-old ears that have undoubtedly been blown to pieces by too many loud rock concerts in the 60s/70s.

Robust stuff!

I had this cable before many years ago... If I recall ..., it should be Version 1... Hence the decision to use it again was a no brainer.... still needs some burn-in... but I believe it will sound better with time.

Thanks again to Futureshop, Geoff Loveday, for helping out with the Order; very pleasant experience...

Great Improvement.

I am very happy with the service I received from Future Shop, and also very happy with the Tellurium Q Black II cables. I went for a 48-hour burn-in, and I feel I noticed an improvement straight away compared to the Q Blue cables that I have been using.

The music seems a lot more open than it was, the bass seems about the same as it was hoping it improves more with more hours on them.

excellent upgrade
8 Dec 2023
Verified Buyer
Having already fitted a TQ Blue II digital and TQ Black II XLR interconnect into my system, I decided on the black II speaker cables. They really were the icing on the cake, giving improvements from top to bottom.
I was concerned they might be too smooth sounding after reading some comments, but no, high frequencies were well extended but without any harshness.

The midrange is so much more detailed, with strong stereo imaging and improved depth. Bass also seems tighter and better extended but without any flabbiness or bloat. Even in my modest system, all these attributes were easily heard.

Highly recommended.

Subtle, but excellent upgrade

Moving up from a £90 pair of cables to these, I wondered if I’d notice a difference, but I needn’t have worried!

Life-changing? Earth-shattering? No! But a relaxed, controlled, clear soundstage that really opened up in front of my listening seat.

And as for clarity? Well, I played some of my favourite demo songs and clearly heard every word (for the first time in some cases!). But simultaneously, there’s no forced treble or boosted mid-range that could easily explain this.

The Celestion 66s (pre-Ditton naming) I refurbished during lockdown are finally singing!

These cables are just on it. As for burn-in, I had the 96-hour version, but they’re still getting better two weeks on.

Drops a star because Blue II is better value if on a budget
8 Aug 2023
Verified Buyer
I might have given these five stars if I didn't already possess the Blue IIs. But I do, and in my honest opinion, the Black II doesn't really merit the price -- not far off three times the cost of the Blue IIs.

I've transferred the Blue II's to my second, nearfield system in my study and now listen through the black IIs on my main system in the lounge, which uses my DIY Decware ZF15M open baffle clones.

In the nearfield system, they replaced my Audioquest FLX/SLiP 14/4s, which, n my honest opinion, are very good value and recommended for anyone wanting to bi-wire on a budget. With the Blue II's I used Blue II jumpers with my Quad S2 speakers, which are clearly better than the FLX's.

But what about the Black IIs in my main system? Well, everything people say about them is true -- better bass, better clarity and soundstage than the Blue IIs, etc., but like I said, I have my doubts about their price -- when the Blue IIs were pretty good too, and sounded a touch louder for a given volume setting.

Moreover, the Blue IIs have an extra, indefinable something that the Black IIs don't seem to possess. One YouTube reviewer (Pursuit Perfect System) pointed this out, too and said it was only an impression but that the Black IIs were better. To which I answer, it may be an impression, but I miss it with the Black IIs -- a certain sweetness and magicality. I'm not sure that the extra bass definition and clarity, which makes the Black II technically superior in most ways, makes the game worth the candle.

It was difficult to decide whether to get the black IIs or the custom-terminated ultra-blue IIs, which would have been considerably cheaper. Eventually, I plumped for the Black IIs and now wonder whether I made the wrong choice. Hey-ho, too late now. Don't get me wrong, the Black IIs are fine cables. It was just my misfortune to have gotten used to the blue IIs and now to miss the extra secret sauce of those in my main system.

I can genuinely appreciate what the Black IIs bring to the party, I just wish the Black IIs also had that extra missing ingredient, whatever it might be.

One other thing: I got the 96 hr. break-in, but that wasn't enough to get the best out of the black IIs, I don't think. Maybe 200-300 hours is a better bet.

Different
14 May 2023
Verified Buyer
I bought new speakers and still used my 12-year-old Xindac FS-1 cables.

Then tested some newer cables. The QED Genesis Silver Spiral is a great-looking cable with and lovely base and details. But some tracks sounded very thin, and I got ear fatigue when listening too long.

Then I tested QED Reference XT40i. Sounded ok, but some lack of dynamic, and I returned to my old Xindac cables.

I found this Tellurium Q Black II and got a better soundstage and less bass. The instruments sound more natural, like the kettledrums in Totos. I remembered the old cables added bass to the kettledrums, but with the Tellurium, it's gone, and It's easy to hear them through the whole song.

More detail and naturalness to instruments and more details and sounds I haven't heard before in songs.

I have problems with ear fatigue. All cables that are too dynamic and analytical make me nervous.

There are more precise cables, more dynamic, with deeper bass and higher frequencies, but if you want a cable with a pleasant tone, deep and wide stage, full tone but high separation, this cable is for you.

It doesn't fascinate at first listen, but after a while, I can't listen to anything else from my cable collection (Chord Epic X, Chord Shawline X, Nac a5, AQ Rocket 11..). On the other hand, it is not for those who want to make their system more dynamic, analytical and attractive at first (for that, I recommend Chord Epic X).

Short and sweet. This cable made a huge difference!

The bass was tighter, the treble sweeter, and there was more detail. I wasn't expecting that much change over my previous Van den Hul cable (that cost pretty much the same).

I highly recommend it - Black magic!

The most bank for the buck!

I have tried more expensive cables, but the Tellurium Black II sounded amazingly transparent, with taut Bass and a very clear midrange after the initial burn-in.

Overall the sound was recognisably fluid. I felt the difference even compared to more expensive, award-winning QED cables, which were my favourites until I tried these Blacks.

Futureshop, your communication, packaging and delivery are outstanding!

A big thank you!!

Great Upgrade

I bought this cable to replace the Tellurium Q Blue, it's distinctly more neutral/natural sounding, and I consider it a good upgrade. If, in fact, you are considering the Blue, and you are able to, I recommend spending a little extra for the Black II.

Interestingly, the Black II is a slightly smaller cable than the Blue.

Big shout out to Mark in customer service for his excellent support and recommendation.

If you can't hear a difference with these cables, you must have poor amplification or something wrong with your ears. It is literally night and day!

I'm 47 years old and have used all sorts of branded cables ranging from £10 a meter - £400! These are a genuine bargain at their price, and to be honest, what they do to your sound! A good affordable cable that DOSN'T break the bank and punches well above its weight !!!

I highly recommend this cable to all my friends as their first upgrade, then RCA cables next!

Did not expect such an improvement to everything

Thank you for your advice. Money well spent.

My old 31-year speakers sound as if they had been in a cupboard and the door had been opened. My EAR 899 amp is excellent but never high on dynamics. Now there is plenty. I'm putting pennies into a piggy bank to bi-wire. I will go back to my music again.

Fantastic cables! Improved soundstage, more clarity, bass, and vocals have pushed a bit forward. Matching my Naim Unity Atom paired with KEF LS50 Metas just nicely. Fast delivery and excellent service as always!

It is highly recommended!

I brought it to replace my ten-year-old DIY 'silver plated' cables, serving my Elac BS312 and Naim Unit Atom.

Very good for the money spent, natural sound, and balanced than my previous cables.

Excellent speaker cables with amazing clarity and detail

Excellent speaker cable. I bought it based on reviews, as it’s quite hard to audition in retailers, and I am not disappointed. There is excellent bass that feels balanced with the mids and treble. I had good cables before, but these are in a different league—good detail retrieval from the music, and very relaxing to listen to. I’m glad I bought them. I opted for full burn-in, which may have helped. Thank you also to Futureshop for their exemplary customer service, clear website and speedy delivery.

Better but not dramatically so

I purchased a set of Tellurium Q Black II Speaker Cables for my recently reinstalled audio system comprising a Cyrus CD8 cd player/Sugden SF100 amplifier/Jamo Concert 8 speakers, which circumstances had led to me not using for a number of years. I initially connected the speakers to the amp with the recently acquired QED 79 Strand Speaker Cable, also purchased from FutureShop and only used for a few hours – the QED cables were not burnt in.

The Tellurium cables did improve the sound; however, the improvement was only discernible to my ears following a direct back to back comparison with the QED cables by playing one short piece of music, immediately swapping the cables and replaying the same piece of music. The bass was tauter and the percussion more “percussive” (I can’t think of a better way to describe the difference). I should add that the Tellurium cables had been burnt in for 96 hours by FutureShop, and it is possible that if the QED cables had experienced a similar burn, the improvement might not have been so noticeable.

I certainly did not hear the dramatic improvement in sound quality that others claim to have experienced, and without back to back comparison, I doubt I would have noticed much difference at all.

I believe that the Tellurium cables are better than the (considerably cheaper) QED cables, but whether the improvement merits the much higher price is another matter. I’m not a cable sceptic, but I’m not convinced that the higher price is justified by the relatively small improvement in the sound quality and remain dubious about some of the overblown claims made for cables and other related HiFi ancillaries, especially the much-used expression “fantastic value for money” bandied about by many reviewers for products costing hundreds of £s.

Finally, I cannot fault the service provided by FutureShop, which was excellent.

Firstly I must say how impressed I have been with the friendly communication, support, advice, and service received from all at FutureShop.

Secondly, the cables arrived beautifully packaged, with precise directional instructions. Connecting them up to my Naim 282/250 was straightforward, and despite only a 96-hour burn-in, the sound quality is superb. Mark advised me that they would continue to improve with an extended period of use. This won't be a hardship as the sound is already airy, dynamic and more entertaining than my old Linn cables.

The cable's compact dimensions make them both practical and aesthetically pleasing too. I also purchased two sets of matching jumper cables, as my Linn Kabers have a tri-wire option. I have always loved these speakers, but the addition of the Tellurium cable and jumpers have moved them into a different league!

You would have to believe in this cable to use it for the speakers on a 5.1 av system. I can find nothing better.
