Future Shop introduces Quantum Science Audio (QSA), a leader in audiophile fuses with over two decades of research in 'Bottle Neck Distortion'. QSA's innovative fuses, previously overlooked in the industry, can significantly enhance audio systems. They focus on reducing 'bottlenecking' effects, thus maximising system performance. Our listening tests and feedback confirm that QSA fuses, across the range, notably improve systems, comparable to higher-priced components. The LIGHT BLUE Entry Level fuse, with added graphene elements, offers enhanced performance and sound dynamics, making it ideal for those advancing in high-fidelity audio.

Quantum Science Audio (QSA) Light-Blue Entry Level UK Mains Fuse

Future Shop is very excited to introduce Quantum Science Audio, the undisputed heavyweights in the audiophile fuse space. With more than 22 years of research into what they call 'Bottle Neck Distortion', QSA products can remarkably enhance your enjoyment of your system for such a small component, until recently considered irrelevant by many in the industry. Since all current that enters a power cable or component in your system must pass through the fuse before it proceeds, the fuse's quality or lack thereof can drastically affect your system's performance. QSA fuses aim to reduce the negative effects of what QSA describe as 'bottlenecking', which can help your system perform to its full potential.

Much of this may sound outrageous, but only to those who have not heard it for themselves. Having conducted our own listening tests and based on external feedback, we are convinced that these fuses- all the way through the range- offer an upgrade to a system that can match components many times the price.

The LIGHT BLUE Entry Level fuse integrates additional graphene elements, seeking to provide a step up in performance. It is designed for those looking to further their journey in high-fidelity audio, potentially offering improved sound dynamics compared to the BLACK.

In the next level up, the YELLOW fuse is intended to offer a more refined audio performance. It incorporates further advancements in material treatment, aiming to provide clearer and more detailed audio reproduction for systems requiring a delicate balance of quality and value.

Each fuse in the QSA lineup is unique, catering to different preferences and audio systems. Ranging from entry-level to high-fidelity enhancements, these fuses are developed with the goal of enhancing the listening experience. However, the impact of these fuses on audio quality can be subjective and may vary based on individual systems and preferences. Users are encouraged to personally evaluate their performance.

Stereo Times Awards

"I can tell you this: many high-end audio tweaks I've heard sound great, but none have matched the QSA's remarkable performance. I repeat, none." (Read More...)

Please note: fuses are directional, so please ensure you install your fuse accordingly. If you are unsure of the correct direction, simply try it both ways. You should hear a difference.

Enhance Your Experience: Free Cable Burn-In Service with Nordost VIDAR Machine

Please take note of the following details regarding our cable burn-in service:

  • Cable Compatibility: We regret to inform you that we cannot burn-in cables with stripped bare ends or BFA plugs. In order for cables to undergo the burn-in process, they should be terminated or have connectors.
  • Timing: Cables will be burnt in for the selected period after processing your order. For custom-length cables, the burn-in process will occur after they have been terminated by the manufacturer or our engineers unless specified otherwise in the product description.
  • Availability: Future Shop provides our cable burn-in service free of charge, but its availability is at our discretion. While we strive to fulfil all burn-in requests for the specified time periods, please understand that during exceptionally busy periods, we may be unable to meet the demand due to limited connections on the Nordost Vidar cable conditioning machines.

The Nordost VIDAR cable burn-in machine integrates three key functions into one operation:

  1. Charge Neutralisation: It eliminates charges that accumulate around the cables and their insulation, ensuring a more balanced electrical environment.
  2. Deep Conditioning: The machine provides a wide band and deep conditioning process that affects the conductor core, resulting in changes to the signal transmission through the metal. This deep conditioning enhances the cable's performance.
  3. Ultrasonic Surface Conditioning: The VIDAR machine utilizes ultrasonic waves to condition the surface of the conductors, optimizing their contact and overall conductivity.

The VIDAR employs a proprietary combination of composite and complex signals to condition the cables. These signals comprise ultra-low and ultra-high frequencies, extending beyond the range of video frequencies. The signal moves back and forth along the cable, penetrating deep into the core with ultra-low frequencies and traversing the surface with ultra-high frequencies. This transmission method generates beat harmonics between the two complex waveforms, which permeate all layers of the cable. The circuitry of the VIDAR also drives electrons from the conductor into the insulation area, neutralizing electrical charges.

Nordost Vidar Burn-in Machine

So, what does this all mean for you?

The ultimate outcome of conditioning cables with the Nordost VIDAR is improved sound staging, increased detail, and an overall more musical presentation in your audio system.

Now, you may wonder why cable burn-in is necessary. During cable manufacturing, gasses become trapped as insulation is applied over the conductors. Additionally, new cables often possess high electrical charges, resulting in a brittle and bright sound that lacks the desired detail and depth for music production.

When cables undergo burn-in, the trapped gasses are dissipated, and small impurities in the conductor metals begin to exhibit diode-like behaviour, favouring current flow in a specific direction.

Here are the physical effects of the burn-in process:

  • Charge Neutralisation: The burn-in process neutralizes charges in the conductors and insulation, promoting a more balanced electrical environment.
  • Wide Bandwidth Frequencies: The conditioning affects how signals pass through the metal, enabling a wider range of frequencies to penetrate all cable layers.
  • Signal Transmission: The burn-in process establishes the directionality of the cable, optimizing signal transmission from one end to the other.

When cables are properly burnt in, you can expect the following audible changes in your audio system:

  • Fuller and Natural Sound: Your system should be capable of producing a more immersive and realistic performance with a fuller and more natural sound.
  • Increased Detail: You may notice enhanced details and nuances in the music, allowing you to perceive subtle elements that were previously hidden.
  • Improved Soundstage: The dimensionality of your system's soundstage can be greatly improved, creating a more spacious and immersive listening experience.

At Future Shop, our goal is to maximise your satisfaction. That's why we offer a free burn-in service on all our cables before they arrive at your door, enabling you to sit back and enjoy the benefits of properly conditioned cables in your audio system.

Rejuvenates your hifi system
28 Oct 2024
I bought this for a family member's birthday. She thinks it's an outstanding fuse for her hifi system. She says the distortion has disappeared, and it has improved clarity and deeper, smoother bass.

She tells me it took two weeks to burn in this fuse, and now she loves her music because of this exceptional fuse.

Purchased this fuse in 3amp. I fitted it to the mains lead of a 50-year-old reel-to-reel tape recorder.

I heard a sonic improvement; sounds had improved definition and clarity.

A cost-effective upgrade.

Did not suit my system

I had high hopes for this QSA blue fuse at £86. My mains leads are all Merlin Tarantula cables that I fitted with AMR gold fuses. I needed extra fuses, and based on the glowing reviews here, I decided to try the QSA blue.

I let it run in for over 100 hours in a Merlin Tarantula cable. I use 2 sets of Chord Signature Tuned Aray interconnects between my MBL CD player, ATC pre-amp and ATC power amp. Chord Signature XL speaker cable feeds a pair of Audio Physic Classic 30 speakers.

I diligently ensured the QSA fuse was inserted correctly in the CD player plug. My first impression was a firmer low-end and mid-range. However, over time, trying different music I perceived the deeper bass was muddy and at times boomy. It's not at all nice to listen to.

At the other end of the scale, the treble was significantly reduced. The sound was not as revealing or musical as it had been.

My expensive Chord Signature Tuned Aray interconnects had started to sound distinctly ropey. What was going on? Using two identical Merlin Tarantula mains leads, one with the QSA blue fuse and the other with my AMR fuse I was able to do an A/B comparison trying each of my 3 hi-fi components. In each case, the sound when using the QSA fuse was inferior to the extent that I could not bear to listen to it.

I concluded that the QSA blue fuse did not suit my own particular system.

Happily, FutureShop let me do a return for store credit.

My hifi is now in the 21st century. This light blue fuse replaced the original fuse in my Technics CH550 hifi system.

The sound improvement is so good; it is crystal clear, even in deeper bass with more detail. This fuse is connected to my NRG-Y 2 cable, which made a massive difference in quality.

For around 1% of total system cost, I got 50% better sound
18 Jun 2024
Verified Buyer
I Got a QSA Light Blue 13A mains plug fuse a week ago after a chat with Mark (a truly helpful chap -- thanks, Mark!). I thought of going for a cheaper one at around £50 just to dip my toes in and see what all the fuss was about. After a conversation, I decided on the £86 QSA Light Blue. I was sceptical, but as a typical audiophile nutcase, I just had to give it a try.

I first put the fuse in a bog-standard mains cable's 3-pin plug the "right" way round. IOW, for a vertical-fused plug, with the arrow on the casing pointing up from the bottom fuse cradle (attached to the live pin) towards the other cradle (attached to the brown live wire). The IEC end of the mains cable was plugged into my Gustard R26 DAC. I noticed a difference immediately, but it got even better the longer it bedded in. I'm not good at describing sound, but the key thing is the increased "fullness" -- something which Mark agreed with when I phoned back (as he suggested) today. Fuller, richer, and altogether more engaging.

Next, I tried the same mains cable with my Acoustic Invader preamp (https://acousticinvader.com/lang/eng/index.html), which produced an even better sound. How much better? Ballpark, I'd say, by 50%. Now, bear in mind that my main system cost me around £5500, but includes a pair of Decware Zen Master ZF15M open baffle speaker clones that I built myself (from Decware plans/licence costing $30) using professionally cut 40mm thick solid oak baffles. These cost me £1300 in total, but to buy factory made would cost at least c. £3000 more, including VAT, shipping and import duties. So in a way, my system could be valued at around £8500. So for £86, or about 1% of the cost, I got a 50% improvement. I've spent several hundred pounds in the past on various tweaks that have made comparatively negligible improvements.

I thought I ought to buy some new mains cables, so I got 4 x MRCU 88s for a total of £100. I installed them yesterday, transferring my Light Blue to the one I connected to my preamp. I was extremely disappointed -- everything sounded thin, dull and uninteresting. Then, I reversed the fuse so that it pointed in the "wrong" direction, which immediately fixed the problem. How come? The MRCU mains plug is vertically fused, just like the generic plug I had originally used. Why on earth should there have been diametrically opposed outcomes? It's a mystery.

Talking to Mark today, he said that using a 13A mains fuse actually produces better results than replacing a fuse in an individual piece of equipment. And of course, it also has the advantage that with just one fuse in one cable, you can try it with many pieces of equipment to see which produces the biggest effect. He also told me- if I understand him correctly- that one can get fuses for the main fuse box. I don't think it would work for me, though, because I have an RCD fuse box that uses electrical switches rather than actual fuses. Having an audiophile fuse in the mains plug and also in the piece of equipment it's attached to apparently improves matters slightly, but I don't know whether the game's worth the candle.

Another advantage is that if one replaces the fuse in a piece of equipment (in the compartment below the IEC inlet), one has to be careful to get the right amperage value and know whether to use a slow or fast blow one. And some pieces of kit may have yet other fuses inside, so it could end up costing a fortune to replace them all. Hence, getting a 13A mains plug audiophile fuse may be both the most affordable and sonically effective way to go.

So where next? I'm considering getting the QSA yellow next month. Yes, I know, it's £200, and I can't imagine -- due to the law of diminishing returns -- that it would make a further worthwhile improvement. But Mark says it should, and he also says that, starting with the yellow, there's a free replacement should it blow -- something that thankfully only very rarely happens. I've tried to protect myself against this extreme eventuality by getting the MCRU cables, a cut above generic ones (if not as grand as some much more expensive mains cables!).

Once again, many thanks to Mark. It's rare these days to have someone like him to ask for advice. It's one reason I've made a number of purchases from Futureshop in the past, including the Tellurium Q black IIs for my main system and Blue IIs for my second, near-field system.

Racing toward a red light.

Red. A colour, right? I thought so until today.

I bought a second of these QSA light blue fuses for my cinema set up as I was so impressed with one I bought for my hifi. Into the £300 MCRU block, it went (again) and replaced a £45 Hifi tuning fuse (again).

In went a Blu-ray of a film I have seen many times - 'It Chapter 2'. Early in the film, Jack Bowers enters the story with a red tee-shirt - hey! That is not just red; it is RED! Look at the texture of the tee and soak up how vibrant and real it looks. I can almost feel RED. Then the clown's balloons and everything else that is red are simply so much more vibrant, detailed and real. That does it.

Once again, the light blue fuse has made a noticeable difference; once again, it is like night and day. For a second time, it is fully endorsed.

Not gone with the wind but still blown away

OMG. I had read all the reviews. Read them again. And again. Is this right? A fuse? For £80. Ouch. Surely, this cannot be right. There is only one way to find out right - get one and try it.

The blue fuse arrived this morning, but other things needed completing, so it was left till evening to try out. What the heck? I placed it into my £300 MCRU mains block, and away we went. Wow.

The extra detail drops my jaw. Playing a few tracks from the Total War era album, the drums are way more forceful, clear and precise. Everything has way more detail, and at the back of the orchestra, a completely new row is now taking part. They were silent before.

Track 14 Rango returns from the film Rango the orchestra is way more alive, forceful, dynamic, and present. It almost feels too much for my small listening room. I was full of doubt about this fuse and the proof. I now have a huge job on not merely re-playing all my CDs but more than that having to re-familiarise myself with all my favourite tracks because they are certainly going to sound different.

PS This fuse replaced a £40 Hifi fuse that was pretty good, I thought, but really, the difference is like night and day. And lastly, I am so glad I opted for the 96 hours of burn-in. Whew! Unequivocally endorsed.

A very good value upgrade for less than 4% cost

The light- blue was purchased within weeks of acquiring the QSA Power Jitter plug and two 5A QSA Back fuses. I have arranged the fuses in order of Jitter Plug, Light Blue and Black. This seemed to work best for me.

Before installing the fuses, when I wanted to listen to detail, I used headphones with a dedicated class A headphone amp. I don't have to do that since the upgrades.

I hope that conveys the overall improvement that the QSA additions provided. The overall cost was less than 4% of my system, so happy days!

Brilliant addition. They need time to burn in though!

I've got 4 of the Light-Blues in my system now and noticed incremental improvements each time I've added one. They take a bit of time to burn in and settle down (about a week each time for me), but once they did, I considered it money well spent. It's like letting a decent wine breathe for a bit.

I will probably upgrade to a Yellow for my distribution block and move that Light-Blue to my subwoofer shortly.

Nice bit of tweakery this, although it is a hard sell to the missus who thinks I've deffo lost the plot. Future Shop is brilliant, too, by the way.

I took a punt as was recommended by the sales team.

Once installed found treble and bass more defined, and on playing Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side, ' I heard details that were hidden before. Also, the soundstage was deeper.

I will be adding more, including a QSA Yellow fuse.

More of the same

I bought one of these a short while ago, just to satisfy myself, once and for all, if audiophile fuses "worked" (see the previous review) or were utter silliness. I'm always open-minded, but with a healthy sprinkle of scepticism, but at £70 and a great returns policy at FutureShop, I bit the bullet and bought the QSA Light Blue.

Following the undeniable positive effects, if the first, single fused, which was placed in the mains plug of my Wireworld Stratus 7 into the mains wall socket, feeding my WW Matrix 2 block, I bought another 2 of these fuses.

These have been placed in the Naim PowerLite power lead into my Naim Nait XS2 and the second fuse into an AQ NRG C7 plug feeding the external power supply for my NJC Reference DAC.

They've been running in for just over a week; on the 8th day; I had the system playing without listening to it until the afternoon; the improvements described in my original review for my first single fuse have seen a cumulative improvement with the two additional fuses, but more strikingly, the bass has taken a dramatic turn for the better.

I have Q Acoustics Concept 40 speakers and a REL T/5x sub; the leading edges of bass notes, from electric bass to acoustic double bass, have become much more defined, tangible, and generally refined. I would have been happy with my system had I never tried the fuses, but now I have, I'm pretty flabbergasted with what I've missed.

I now have two more potential places for more fuses; AQ NRG power lead feeding the REL and Wireworld Stratus 7 feeding the LPS powering my modded Bluesound Node. These will be purchased in due time.

Thanks again, as always, to FutureShop and the excellent no-nonsense customer service they deliver.

Positive Difference

I was highly sceptical regarding fuses, mainly mains plug fuses, but I wanted to put the issue of audiophile fuses to bed once and for all for my peace of mind.

I am/was very open-minded and need to try things for myself before forming an opinion/conclusion. With FutureShop's generous returns policy, buying one of these fuses, at least to satisfy my pondering, was a no brainer.

Anyway, I've tried the fuse in 3 configurations;

AQ PC to Node - subtle but a definite improvement - track components stood out a little further from each other, a little more prominent in the space between speakers.

Naim PowerLite PC feeding Nait XS2 - same as above, but more pronounced, still subtle, but undeniable

Lastly, Wireworld Stratus 7 PC into WW Matrix 2 - yep, OK, I have no idea how these fuses function and don't particularly care; I know that these things make an undeniable difference. Is it night and day? For me, no? Do they give my system an improvement? Absolutely! The last placement gave me more of the same as the first two.

I'm not sure if the effect would be enhanced further by more fuses and/or by trying fuses further up the product line, but as an experiment and to help form my own opinion on this contentious topic, this fuse is staying put; there will be no Returns Request to FutureShop.

Will I experiment further? A matter of when not if.

As always, flawless service from Future Shop.

The imaging was better; the musicians were better placed between the speakers.

Not sure where to start, but this is the best seventy quid you're likely to spend on an upgrade. Focus, air, detail, fluidity. I could go on, a very worthwhile upgrade from gold plated basic fuse. I am using it in an AudioQuest Monsoon. I fear the yellow is now calling.
