An outstanding cable at a fair price
7 Jan 2025
I bought the QED Genesis Silver Spiral a few days ago and am actually still testing it. I didn't use the "burn-in" service because I find it fascinating how the cable practically transforms "in front of my ears" over time.

I previously had the QED XT40i, a warm-sounding cable with very good resolution, which I was very happy with. But I was looking for a sound that was crisper and more spatial.

Before I share my first impressions of the Silver Spiral, I would like to thank Futureshop for their sound advice, especially Gary, who "warned" me that the Silver Spiral could sound significantly brighter than the XT40i. I still decided to buy the Silver Spiral and have no regrets. Futureshop's delivery of the cable was also super quick and without any problems. Thanks for that, too!

Now to my impressions. I would like to emphasize that listening impressions are, of course, always subjective and, on the other hand, depending on the respective setup of the stereo system and the room in which the music is being heard. With that in mind, I can say the following about the Silver Spiral:

Indeed, the Silver Spiral sounds brighter than the XT40i. Not extreme, however. Good tracks to test whether a stereo system actually sounds too bright are, for example, the keyboards on "Sound and Vision" by David Bowie or the vibraphone on the album "Ballads for Two" by Chet Baker and Wolfgang Lackerschmid. If tracks like this hurt your ears, there's definitely something wrong with the treble. However, that is not the case with the Silver Spinal. Nothing is exaggerated, everything sounds the way I think it should sound.

Basically, the Silver Spiral sounds crisper compared to the XT40i, the instruments have more "body", which means the music appears more three-dimensional in the room. The timbres are also more pronounced, cymbals actually sound more metallic, wood sounds like wood (for example when a guitarist taps on his instrument). Drums also sound more "physical" - I was amazed at how powerful and at the same time structured the bass drum sounded with the Silver Spiral in the song "Watt Good am I" by Tom Jones.

What's also interesting about the Silver Spiral is that the bass is deeper and more powerful than in comparison to the XT40i. Despite the “extra punch”, the bass always remains clearly structured.

Whether the cable is neutral or not is always difficult to judge. What is neutral anyway? I can only ever determine this from piano pieces - and then I notice that with the Silver Spital a piano sounds like a piano, what's more, it sounds as if the piano is in my room. The fact that the piano is also a percussion instrument is clearly audible.

When it comes to details and resolution, the Silver Spital and the XT40i don't make much difference. You won't hear more detail with the Silver Spiral - although the details actually sound more defined.

Example: In the piece "You Look Good To Me" by Oscar Peterson on the album "We Get Requests", the bassist first strokes the bass with a bow. Then he places the bow on the floor and begins to pluck with his fingers. I could also hear something being placed on the floor, a small “click,” with the XT40i. But with the Silver Spiral you can hear that it is actually a bow that is placed on the ground. So, "more details in detail".
I don't know if I'm expressing myself understandably.

All in all, I'm looking forward to what the Silver Spiral will sound like once it's really burned in. I'm sorry that this text has become so long. I hope I didn't bore anyone to death.

Impressive cable, impeccable sales
30 Nov 2024
Purchased the QED Genesis Silver Spiral from FutureShop, to run between Naim Uniti Star and Focal Kanta 1. I did a lot of research and calculations to convince myself that they are compatible with Naim amplification, and indeed, they are!

Specs wise, the Silver Spirals are very close to Naim’s Superlumina, but at a fraction of the price!

Even before burn-in, it is VERY obvious that the bass is (much) tighter, stereo imaging and soundstage better than the NACA5s that I ran for 3 years! Coming from the camp that cables do not make significant difference in the forever controversy, the Genesis Silver Spiral is truly impressive!!

I also want to compliment the team at FutureShop for their impeccable service. I made a boo boo by ordering 1 pcs instead of a pair, and made a re-order for another piece only hours later.

Steve Durham (Sales at FutureShop) intercepted my first order, combined the shipment, and refunded the second shipment charge within 24 hours. I received both cables in 48 hours through DHL Express.

If you’re still deciding, rest assured that speaker cables do make a difference, and there is no better place than FutureShop to get them!

These cables are beautifully constructed, though almost impossible to bend, though I consider this a very minor gripe.

They have totally transformed my front speakers, giving me a soundstage I have never experienced before with my Monitor Audio Silver 8s. I was actually thinking of upgrading the speakers for some Bowers and Wilkins, but I decided to spend the money on a Marantz Cinema 30 instead.

It's an amazing cable and worth every penny.

I have used Future Shop several times and will continue to do so.

First class service, keep up the good work.

These speaker cables are superb value. They are pretty transparent, with a good solid bass, neutral mids, and a nice extended treble.

Amazing service I ordered them at 4:30 and they arrived the following day.

A revelation

I should be awarding ten stars. Five for the cable and five for Future Shop.

The cable. My technical background has always made me a bit cynical about some of the claims from cable manufacturers. Some are just snake oil. But from the first switch-on, the improvement was undeniable. It was sharper like I had just cleaned my glasses. The soundstage jumped into 3D. I am a bit embarrassed to admit all of this.

It's a lot of money ( I think ) for a bit of wire, but it's worth it and more for my £7k system. I chose QED because, over the decades, they have always been honest and avoided the pseudo-scientific claims of so many other manufacturers. And they are made in the UK. This is a large diameter and very stiff and heavy cable that you can not just hide away. I chose spades rather than plugs to reduce the weight of trying to bend the plug/ socket/back plate of the amp.

Future shop. Brilliant and very quick service. They built them, ran them in, and I still got them about four days later.
