Chord Electronics Mojo 2 Portable/Desktop DAC/Headphone Amp

The Mojo 2 is a revamped version of the already-groundbreaking Mojo, now featuring a superior USB-C connection and brand-new menu system alongside reworked electronics. This new version does still offer compatibility with the Poly, as well as a double-output for shared listening and the superlative design that is synonymous with Chord Electronics.

Mojo 2 redefines the portable audio standard

The world’s first lossless DSP sees Mojo 2 set the benchmark for portable sound quality. Again.

What Chord Electronics say

Chord Electronics has launched Mojo 2, the replacement for the genre-defining original portable DAC/headphone amplifier.

Almost seven years after Chord Electronics created the high-end portable DAC genre, the company’s long-standing digital design consultant, Rob Watts, has revisited, reimagined and reengineered the award-winning original with ground-breaking, world-first technology.

The new Mojo 2 benefits from several new features, chief of which is a revolutionary lossless DSP, the first of its kind in the world.

The innovative new ‘UHD DSP’ is fully transparent, enabling comprehensive tone adjustments across the frequency range, without any degradation in sound quality. The new technology gives Mojo 2 unrivalled compatibility with today’s wide-ranging choice of headphones, regardless of type and sonic signature, plus flexibility with different source components and digital file types.

A further key feature is the introduction of a menu system. Navigated via a new (fourth) control sphere, the menu brings a mute function, four-setting crossfeed adjustment, a button-lock feature for travelling, plus the fully lossless tone controls.

New USB-C data input

Digital inputs have increased to four, thanks to a new USB-C data input for greater flexibility. USB-C is featured alongside optical, coaxial (incl. dual-data for the M Scaler) and Micro USB. Two 3.5 mm mini-jack headphone outputs allow up to two people to listen simultaneously.

Better battery and charging

Mojo 2 benefits from greatly improved battery management, thanks to a new FPGA-based battery-charging system. The tech brings much faster charging rates, coupled with a huge 75 % reduction in power loss for cooler, more efficient charging. Capacity is up by 9 %, resulting in better efficiency and improved battery life, which is now better than eight hours.

Mojo 2’s established ‘Intelligent Desktop Mode’ technology has also been improved, with an isolated battery and PSU redesign to support battery-free operation without any losses in sound quality, plus improved filtering and isolation.

Improved transparency

Mojo 2 is now DC-coupled with a digital DC servo. It benefits from an improved WTA (Watts Transient Aligned) filter, now offering 40,960 taps (the technical indicator of how complex the interpolation filter is), using 40 DSP cores.

Additionally, an improved noise-shaper offers greater depth and detail perception, plus improvements to the 4e Pulse Array DAC introduce lower distortion and out-of-band noise. Greater neutrality has also been achieved, thanks to the elimination of coupling capacitors.

New fully transparent UHD DSP

Mojo 2 benefits from the world’s first fully transparent ‘UHD DSP’. The proprietary technology uses a 104-bit custom DSP core running at 705/768 kHz: no other audio DSP offers the same accuracy. By using 104 bits plus extensive internal noise-shaping, Mojo 2 can deliver complete transparency by preserving the filtering of ultra-small signals.

UHD DSP features

The unique UHD DSP enables fine-tuning across the full frequency range with 18 steps of adjustment per frequency banding: lower bass, mid-bass, lower treble and high treble.

The volume control range has also been improved from +18 dB to -108 dB, and now benefits from two distinct operational ranges: low and high volume.

A new four-setting crossfeed function, also DSP-controlled, brings speaker-like spatial effects for flexible headphone listening.

Class-leading build quality

The Mojo 2 is designed, engineered and handmade in the UK. It benefits from high-grade, bead-blasted aluminium casework, finished with a high-quality black anodise. Control is via four polychromatic polycarbonate control spheres.

Go wireless with Poly

Mojo 2 is fully compatible with the Poly streamer/server, enabling high-resolution streaming and up to 2 TB of solid-state library storage and playback when using the microSD card slot.

A Coaxial input G Menu button (new)
B USB-C input H Volume down/menu '-'
C Micro-USB input I Volume up/menu '+'

AV Forums - Affordable Hi-Fi Product 2023/24

"Its powers of analysis, for instance, its ability to identify, reveal and contextualise even the finest, most transient details of a recording is remarkable. No shred of information eludes it, no matter how fleeting or how deep in the mix -

the Mojo 2 will tease it out and position it precisely in the overall presentation." (Read More)

Product Review - AV Forums - June 2023

"Quite apart from a stock sound that feels more accurate and energetic compared to the V1, the Mojo 2’s DSP suite is seamless in terms of having no impact on dynamic range and a lack of volume attenuation. You can hear the changes it makes right away and you tweak it right across the frequency range to suit your tastes."

Competing with Dacs well out of its category
11 Aug 2024
Verified Buyer
Amazing little DAC, do not let the size fool you! Upon first listening, it sounded very clean, spacious, and kind of what I was led to expect. It's after a few songs/hours in that you realise the detail retrieval on this thing is absolutely nuts.

Parts of songs I know very well were coming through that I'd never heard before, and it does a classy job of it, too!

The DSP side impressed me more than I expected. It doesn't collapse at all, either. It can make a muddy recorded heavy track, for instance, sound punchy and clean if you want to tidy it up a little and give it a slam!

I wouldn't say the CrossFeed was anything to get too excited about; it's still pretty cool. I just find myself not really using it as it is only subtle.

If you're like me and you only use an Android phone and a pair of MTH50s headphones, this thing will blow your phone out of the park. The whole experience is 5x more intimate with music. I've got around 6 - 7 hours off a full charge, too. The best part is I know I've only unlocked about 30% of this mojo due to my headphones.

With a headphone upgrade, this thing will shine!

For good quality IEM’s the Mojo 2 is highly recommended
8 Sep 2023
Verified Buyer
I purchased the Chord Mojo 2 for one purpose, and that is to drive IEMs. It was not purchased to drive over-ear headphones, as I use an SPL Phonitor II to drive my Sennheiser HD800 and Shure SRH1540 over-ears. It was also not purchased to operate as a stand-alone DAC, as I own numerous professional-level DACs.

I use the Mojo 2 with both Shure SE846’s and Sennheiser IE900’s. I use WAV files for the audio source. The sound quality of the Mojo 2 is a massive improvement over a standard Apple MacPro or iPhone audio output. There are numerous reviews of the Mojo 2, and they all praise the sound quality. It is difficult to describe the sound quality, but it is excellent and addictive.

Much has been written criticising the Mojo 2’s micro USB charging point. This does not bother me at all, as Micro USB connectors are still in plentiful supply. The small Apple wall wort that came with earlier iPhones charges it adequately.

Also, the four coloured orbs that control the Mojo 2 have been criticised. Again, this interface does not bother me, but I do not use many of the built-in functions. You do need to refer to the quick start-up guide when you first use the Mojo 2.

I listen to the Mojo 2 “flat”, and as a result, I have not used the tone controls, so I cannot comment on them.

I also have not used the cross-feed function.

The battery life appears to be close to what Chord claims, that is, 8 hours, but the IEMs I am using are low impedance, and I do not listen at high levels, so I am not loading the Mojo 2 heavily.

I come from the world of professional sound. In my world, the Chord Mojo 2 is an absolute bargain.

To sum up, for driving good quality IEMs and you require high sonic quality, the Chord Mojo 2 is highly recommended.

Superb sound in a tiny package

This little DAC/Headphone amp combo produces crystal clear sound.

The included EQ introduces none of the artefacts or audible distortion that many digital EQs cause. The noise floor is beautifully low and is inaudible with my high sensitivity (114db) headphones. With my Focals, they introduce a sense of authority that drives distortion-free bliss from virtually any source to any requested volume.

Whether listening on a desktop system or on the go, this is the amp to use; it punches far above its price point.

Excellent purchase thanks to Future Shop

Verified Buyer
I purchased the Mojo 2 from Future shop. They went an extra (100) miles to make it happen; a big thanks for that.

Mojo 2 is exactly how hundreds of professional reviewers described it on the net—clear, detailed, super enjoyable sound (without even using its EQ). I usually listen to an A&K Kann Alpha DAP, DSD, WAV, FLAC files via 4.4 balanced output, and it sounds fantastic.

However, by connecting the Mojo 2 to the Alpha, I can hear a lot more crystal clear details behind the main sound that I've never heard with only using the Alpha. And the Mojo 2 only has 3.5 stereo outputs. I was always a strong believer in balanced output, but for me, it is a very impressive achievement by Chord to create a more detailed sound via 3.5mm.

Extremely happy and satisfied with the purchase, and again a big thank you for Future shop.

Outstanding. New features offer further improvement

Great product from a great British company. It’s hard to argue with those who say this is the best portable DAC.

I use Chord Electronics amplification for my 2-channel rig at home, and MOJO 2 has all the same virtues. It just sounds beautiful. It’s not the simplest to use on the go, its coloured lights require homework to understand what each means for each setting, and it still relies on a mini USB for charging…you may need to buy separate leads, adding expense ….BUT.. you’ll forget all about that once you start listening.

How about the bass, mids, and treble? …is it better with certain headphones?…isn’t battery life pretty average for a DAC these days?… shouldn’t it have more features? …etc. etc. ….You’ll forget all about that when you hear music presented the way it should be. Clear, powerful, emotional, and satisfying. £50O is a lot of money to improve the music on the go or at your desk.

I certainly fretted a lot about that before buying. But it’s bringing me so much pleasure that….yes, I’ve now forgotten about the cost concerns! If you want the best, get MOJO 2.

Truly Fun Listening Experience

I've never wanted to mess with the EQ settings. I was afraid that I would change the manufacturer's intended sound. The Mojo 2 completely welcomes changing the EQ settings, and it sounds great no matter how you change it.

It's like eating at a restaurant where you know anything you order will taste good.

Astonishing performance
25 May 2022
Verified Buyer
The Chord Mojo 2 is an astonishing piece of kit, which transforms the audio output from mobile phones and laptops into an incredibly natural-sounding, detailed and immersive aural experience, challenging the concept that source matters most. Clarity and separation across the spectrum are impressive; bass is rhythmic, well-controlled and extends satisfyingly deep; the midrange is vivid and soundstage broad; the top-end: is taut. Overall, the presentation is engaging, musical, and not tiring, even after several hours of head/earphone listening.

Functionally, four separate inputs provide flexibility for use inside the home or outside it, but the twin 3.5mm outputs are primarily aimed at the ear or headphone use, although the Mojo 2 could also be integrated into an alternative home hi-fi solution; and its stellar musical performance invites you to try this (which I intend to do soon). The menu system isn't challenging to master, although I'd have preferred fewer depresses to enable the lock facility.

The Mojo 2 is very well-engineered, and I'd conclude that it's a steal at £449 for its simplicity, flexibility and performance.
