Chord Clearway Digital Coaxial Audio Cable

The Clearway Digital Coaxial features a Solid Core OFC conductor and gas-foamed polyethylene insulation, with silver-plated terminations, delivering accurate and transparent signal transfer for clean replication of sound.

What Chord say

The Chord Clearway Digital is an all-new Tuned ARAY digital audio cable at an incredibly affordable price point. Available in a wide range of terminations, including a 3.5mm mono jack for today’s high-performance portable devices, the Clearway Digital was conceived to deliver no-compromise digital audio, to and from a wide range of audio products.

Standard terminations include Chord’s high-performance direct silver-plated VEE 3 RCA plugs as well as silver-plated BNC plugs. The Chord Company has also recognised the increasing importance of high-performance portable DACs and is offering Clearway Digital terminated with a 3.5mm mono jack. This configuration allows owners of DACs or devices equipped with a 3.5mm coaxial socket to experience the levels of clarity, detail and musical coherence inherent in digital Tuned ARAY cables.

Clearway Digital takes design cues from the company’s extraordinarily revealing flagship Sarum Super ARAY Digital to produce a £100 interconnect with an exceptionally transparent and coherent performance. Clearway Digital uses an oxygen-free copper conductor combined with gas-foamed polyethylene insulation and woven copper shield. Clearway Digital refines 30 years of Chord Company know-how into a highly affordable interconnect for the digital age; it replaces the company’s popular Prodac VEE3 digital cable.

DACs are making enormous strides in performance and affordability. Chord is thrilled to introduce its ARAY technology, first developed for the Sarum Digital cable, to the Clearway Digital. Clearway Digital is an extremely affordable way to experience the exceptional coherence with which digital ARAY cables carry a musical signal.

The Plugs

Fitted with Chord VEE 3 RCA plugs, including PTFE insulation between signal/return contacts. The ABS outer shell and direct silver-plating process improve signal transfer.

The Conductor

The ARAY conductor design reduces interference and internal reflections. This new construction method prevents any direct compression on the signal conductor, eliminating changes to impedance.

The Cable

The cable also benefits from a solid core, oxygen free copper signal conductor, low loss, high performance, gas foamed polyethylene insulation, high density braided shield and ARAY conductor. The outer jacket seals and protects the signal conductor from mechanical interference. Like all Chord ARAY cables, the Clearway Digital is extremely transparent and carries digital signals with a high degree of accuracy. Using Chord ARAY cables will help you enjoy your system at its musically coherent best.

Enhance Your Experience: Free Cable Burn-In Service with Nordost VIDAR Machine

Please take note of the following details regarding our cable burn-in service:

  • Cable Compatibility: We regret to inform you that we cannot burn-in cables with stripped bare ends or BFA plugs. In order for cables to undergo the burn-in process, they should be terminated or have connectors.
  • Timing: Cables will be burnt in for the selected period after processing your order. For custom-length cables, the burn-in process will occur after they have been terminated by the manufacturer or our engineers unless specified otherwise in the product description.
  • Availability: Future Shop provides our cable burn-in service free of charge, but its availability is at our discretion. While we strive to fulfil all burn-in requests for the specified time periods, please understand that during exceptionally busy periods, we may be unable to meet the demand due to limited connections on the Nordost Vidar cable conditioning machines.

The Nordost VIDAR cable burn-in machine integrates three key functions into one operation:

  1. Charge Neutralisation: It eliminates charges that accumulate around the cables and their insulation, ensuring a more balanced electrical environment.
  2. Deep Conditioning: The machine provides a wide band and deep conditioning process that affects the conductor core, resulting in changes to the signal transmission through the metal. This deep conditioning enhances the cable's performance.
  3. Ultrasonic Surface Conditioning: The VIDAR machine utilizes ultrasonic waves to condition the surface of the conductors, optimizing their contact and overall conductivity.

The VIDAR employs a proprietary combination of composite and complex signals to condition the cables. These signals comprise ultra-low and ultra-high frequencies, extending beyond the range of video frequencies. The signal moves back and forth along the cable, penetrating deep into the core with ultra-low frequencies and traversing the surface with ultra-high frequencies. This transmission method generates beat harmonics between the two complex waveforms, which permeate all layers of the cable. The circuitry of the VIDAR also drives electrons from the conductor into the insulation area, neutralizing electrical charges.

Nordost Vidar Burn-in Machine

So, what does this all mean for you?

The ultimate outcome of conditioning cables with the Nordost VIDAR is improved sound staging, increased detail, and an overall more musical presentation in your audio system.

Now, you may wonder why cable burn-in is necessary. During cable manufacturing, gasses become trapped as insulation is applied over the conductors. Additionally, new cables often possess high electrical charges, resulting in a brittle and bright sound that lacks the desired detail and depth for music production.

When cables undergo burn-in, the trapped gasses are dissipated, and small impurities in the conductor metals begin to exhibit diode-like behaviour, favouring current flow in a specific direction.

Here are the physical effects of the burn-in process:

  • Charge Neutralisation: The burn-in process neutralizes charges in the conductors and insulation, promoting a more balanced electrical environment.
  • Wide Bandwidth Frequencies: The conditioning affects how signals pass through the metal, enabling a wider range of frequencies to penetrate all cable layers.
  • Signal Transmission: The burn-in process establishes the directionality of the cable, optimizing signal transmission from one end to the other.

When cables are properly burnt in, you can expect the following audible changes in your audio system:

  • Fuller and Natural Sound: Your system should be capable of producing a more immersive and realistic performance with a fuller and more natural sound.
  • Increased Detail: You may notice enhanced details and nuances in the music, allowing you to perceive subtle elements that were previously hidden.
  • Improved Soundstage: The dimensionality of your system's soundstage can be greatly improved, creating a more spacious and immersive listening experience.

At Future Shop, our goal is to maximise your satisfaction. That's why we offer a free burn-in service on all our cables before they arrive at your door, enabling you to sit back and enjoy the benefits of properly conditioned cables in your audio system.

Curious if coax was better than optical.
20 Jul 2024
Verified Buyer
I wanted to see if coax was better than optical to connect the streamer to the DC. I already had Chord Optical cable (Future Shop).

There is not a massive difference, but it feels a little clearer.

I tried other cables, and the Chord Clearway cable has more separation and clarity than them, enabling you to follow lyrics clearly whilst not losing in the bass notes.

Clean signal to my DAC

I used to use the standard USB cable to feed my DAC from my PC.

I got this cable to allow streaming from my Pi2AES directly to the DAC ... what a difference in sound I got

I can't recommend it enough.

Chord Clearway Digital 1M -loud 'n 'clear..!
15 Mar 2023
Verified Buyer
I needed a proper 75 Ohm digital coax cable to link my Audiolab 6000CDT to my Naim V1 DAC. The other cables in my Naim-based system consist mainly of Chord and QED, although the digital cable was an unknown cheaper cable pushed into service upon the arrival of the Audiolab recently.

My shortlist was either the QED Reference or the Chord Clearway, but with the Clearway boasting of the ARRAY construction as found on their (much) more expensive cables, I thought I would try it. Well, I'm glad I did.

I believe a digital cable over a 'stock' interconnect will not give night & day difference, but if your system is of sufficient quality (my Naim amps are NAC202 +NAP200DR), the sound quality came over as very subtle, in as much that during busy Jazz/ or rock passages, instruments and vocals became easier to follow making music more enjoyable.

For the money - give it a try, I think you will not be disappointed. For me, it's a keeper. The service from Futureshop, as always, was excellent. The order was processed and delivered within 24 hours. The cable was the latest batch with the new 'ChorAlloy' enhanced plating, and the packaging arrived safely.

All Good. I am delighted with the purchase.

At least as good as I expected
15 Dec 2022
Verified Buyer
I purchased this cable to connect my CD transport to my streamer/DAC. I am impressed by the build quality, using substantial connectors and cables. I also liked the fact that I could purchase a short cable as I wanted to keep the cable length as short as possible.

As for the sound, I can say that I believe that it's as good as my ears can detect. I don't think I would notice any improvement if I had spent ten times as much.

Replaced (much cheaper) AudioQuest Forest between my Audiolab 6000cdt and Q-DAC. It gave much more detail and transparency, giving a far more musically convincing sound.

It made a far greater improvement than I expected from a digital cable.

Chord Clearway Is the Best Investment for Clarity and Detail
13 Sep 2022
Verified Buyer
Chord Clearway is the best investment for clarity and detail, a former What Hifi category winner and rightly so.

It opens up the sound stage and tightens the bass, delivering music exactly how I, and I am sure many of you, like it. Well worth the investment.

I thought my CDs were missing something using standard Wireworld cable.

I upgraded to Chord Clearway cable, and wow, night and day difference. More clarity, openness and bass response. I now won't buy any other brand but Chord.

Sublime!

UPGRADE INTERCONNECT'S

I have always believed in good quality interconnects. Upgrading to the Chord Clearway Digital Coaxial Audio Cable, although expensive, it is well worth doing. Just listening to something you know well will convince you how good this interconnect is.

I fully recommend the Chord Clearway Digital Coaxial Audio cable.

Clear by name and clear by nature

I recently acquired a Linn Numerik DAC to go with my Karik CD player (owned since new). It came without interconnects, so to get going, I obtained some budget-priced Van damme cables to join the two, with the idea of upgrading to quality items when funds permitted. I instantly felt that these were holding back the sound, which was disappointingly nowhere near the quality I remembered when having the Karik/Numerik combination demonstrated new back in nineteen ninety-something. I wondered if it was just that the units were 'tired'.

After reading the glowing reviews, I decided to try these Chord Clearway digital interconnects; 1m long BNC/BNC for the signal and RCA/RCA for the sync lock. Well, the difference in the sound was staggering; it was as if someone had removed a curtain from in front of the speakers. The quality is now everything I remember from that demonstration and more besides. The difference that these cables made over the combination linked with budget cables is over, and above the that made over the Karik by the Numerik, so highly recommended!

If using these with the Linn combination, remember that the sync lock cable needs its directionality from the Numerik to the Karik, as the CD is slaved from the DAC. Signal directionality (with the BNCs) from CD to DAC, obviously.

Neutral sound
24 Jan 2022
Verified Buyer
My interconnect’s between my DAC and integrated amp are Chord Clearway. I was using AudioQuest Cinnamon digital coaxial between my CD transport and amp, but after changing my speaker cable from QED XT40i to Genesis Silver Spiral, I found my system to be just a bit bright on some music.

Chord cables are neutral sounding and have a very nice clean and clear sound, which I like. I wanted to hear if the digital coaxial from the Chord would just take the edge off the slight brightness I had as I wanted to keep the silver spiral as the sound stage they provide is really excellent. After installing the chord digital cable, I was very happy with the results, a clean, clear and crisp sound without the harshness on the top end. The cinnamon was not a bad cable, but the sparkle it brings on the highs ended up being a bit too much. Also, the cinnamon could not match the sound clarity of the Chord.

Not for my ears
6 Jan 2022

Upgraded from Chord C-line digital, which performed just fine, but the clearway digital just hasn't gelled in my system.

After a couple of hundred hours of listening, and initially big problem with the integration of some treble frequencies with the rest of the music has lessened but not gone away so I will be swapping this cable out now.

This is probably just an individual problem with my ears/system, as everyone else loves this cable.

Clarity in a cable
15 Nov 2021
Verified Buyer
The Chord Clearway Digital Coaxial Audio Cable has been a What HiFi award winner, and you can hear why.

After being burned in, I could hear the separation between the instruments much clearer, vocals were crisper, and the bass was tighter. I am no audiophile, although I do use the cables in my DJ setup to tell when the equipment helps because my mixes become tighter.

I bought this to see if it would sound better than the current optical cable I have been using between my DAC and CD recorder, but it sounds exactly the same, in all honesty. It does the job; however, so does the existing and much cheaper cable. On that basis, I wouldn't recommend this cable.

Happily Surprised

Over the past few years, I have been upgrading in stages my Hi-Fi system to a stage now which will happily see me into my box!
With many new remastered CD box sets is also included a bonus DVD Audio disc, which gives what's in the box in a high res format.
I had tried these in my Panasonic Blue Ray HDD/DVD machine linked up to the on board DAC input of my Marantz SA-10 Signature SACD player.

They didn't sound bad as such, but no competition with the CD version played on the Marantz. I was using a fairly cheap 7 metre Toslink Optic cable and on line research into reviews and tests showed that Coax cable is the best choice for the job. After a few hours online research into the various different makes, types, user and audio magazine expert reviews, I settled on the Chord Clearway Coax made up to a 7 metre length. Glad I did! The cable now installed has made reproduction from the DVD player to the SACD's DAC when compared to the optic fibre, like night from day! Audio reproduction is now well up to the level from CDs in the SACD player!

Earlier on today, played the DVD Audio accompanying the Eric Clapton Unplugged box set..the clarity, the sub bass..unbelievable.
Also a good test are the Blue Ray DVDs in the huge Tangerine Dream Virgin Years box set, these discs have now come alive.
This is not a cheap cable but if you have the system which deserves it, buy it.

Great value and performance. Audiolab tell me to use a coax digital cable between my tuner and my CD player bot Audiolab to achieve best results, I was unsure of the results and what cable to use coaxial cables vary so much in price so this is where future shop come into play, talking to the very knowledgeable team we went for the Chord clearway cable with a 60 day money back guarantee, so with nothing to lose I ordered this cable it arrived on Saturday I have to say the result was amazing the up-scaling effect on DAB radio was excellent sound quality so close to CD performance very pleased with this excellent cable.

Outperform QED Performance Digital Coax
22 Nov 2018
Verified Buyer
Out performs QED Performance Digital Coax. Upon comparison with a QED performance digital cable with this Chord Clearway that is connected between a Pioneer BDP450 and NAD C368 built-in DAC, immediate results indicated the Signal-to-Noise (SN) ratio has increased by a few dB where i've to turn down my amp volume a bit after a restart-up.

After about 6 hours of run-in time, as expected, the stereo field has become impressively wider due to higher SN ratio...instruments sounded more analogue / lifelike....timing becomes more foot tapping / rhythmic which is quite surprising coming from a Class D amp which is usually has a laid back character.

Music now flows more smoothly & dynamic which sounds very similar to my Wireworld Oasis 7 RCA audio cable which is connected to my same amp but paired with a Pioneer BDP 180.

In conclusion, Chord tuned array design do really work, especially for digital signal, which i had found out earlier when i bought a C-Stream cable.
