Atlas EOS 4DD UK Mains Power Cable

It’s long been known that the quality of mains power can have a dramatic effect on the performance of hifi & home cinema systems. A clean, quality power supply requires cables resistant to external interference and noise on the mains itself. The Eos 4dd Power Cable uses OFC 4mm² conductors in an aluminium foil screened configuration with Atlas' DD (dual drain) system and their precision-engineered mains plug. The 4dd is specifically designed for ‘high-end’ systems and high power devices.

Power management is required principally as a result of the increasingly negative impact of electical, radio frequency and electromagnetic noise pollution flooding our homes and daily life. With increasing use of high resolution audio and video content our replay equipment has come under assault by extraneous high energy broad spectrum noise, both airborne and directly induced through the mains supply circuits. Wi-fi networks, BlueTooth devices, mobile & domestic cordless phones, ‘wallwart’ power adapters, low voltage light bulbs & dimmer switches are among the worst noise-generating culprits.

Eos power cables are sophisticated products designed specifically to allow your equipment to perform properly. Built around high purity low resistance OFC (Oxygen Free Copper), with low series resistance, high-efficiency dielectrics and extensive screening, Eos 4dd cables effectively filter out harmful incoming radio frequency and power contamination, dumping these rapidly to earth. By comparison a typical domestic power lead in comparison, lacks the quality of component parts, screening layers, dual drain system and anti-vibration treatment Atlas' employ in Eos.

For maximum effectiveness, Eos cables are best used as part of a complete Power Management System.

Oxygen Free Copper (OFC)

OFC is produced through an extrusion process which takes place in an oxygen-free-inert-gas atmosphere. This leads to a reduced oxygen content (10 ppm) when compared to Tough Pitch Copper (TPC) and an improvement in conductivity which typically measures in at between 0.5% and 2% greater than TPC. The OFC process therefore produces a much higher quality audio cable than the TPC process. High purity conductors sound clearer than their unprocessed (TPC) counterparts because there are fewer crystal boundaries present to cause signal degradation.

Atlas DD (Dual Drain) System

Normally screened cables suffer from screen distortion when they are prepared for production. (If you've ever wired a plug or connector which uses a screened cable, you've done this yourself, cutting back and probably twisting the screening braid for termination). This distortion of the screen has a measurable impact, effectively changing the impedance and therefore the performance of the cable.

Atlas' ‘dd’ configuration is based on a simplified version of the techniques they developed for their top-of-the-range Mavros and Asimi interconnects. Twin symmetrical drain wires (each attached to 180° segments of the plug) are inserted between a 100% copper/Mylar™ foil and screen. The unique dd system connects the screen effectively to the cable return/plug interface, meaning the cable can be terminated without distorting, twisting or mechanically stressing the precision-laid screen. The benefits are in maintaining a consistent low impedance load to the plug, and a total 360° screening against noise and signal loss caused by RFI (Radio Frequency Interference).

PTFE Dielectric

PVC (Poly Vinyl Chloride) is cheap to produce and, as such, is the most commonly used insulation in AV cables. However, PVC is the worst quality insulation a Hi-Fi or AV signal can encounter as its high loss causes a significant reduction in signal velocity. PVC is better suited to power cables and should be avoided in Hi-Fi and AV signal cables.

Other dielectrics in common use are Polyethylene, Polypropylene and Polytetrafluoride Epoxy (better known as PTFE (Teflon™) or Teflon,) and the new and unique Atlas (PTFE).

PTFE (Teflon™) is usually applied at higher temperatures and in combination with OFC conductors. OCC materials don’t like high temperatures (soldering, applying the dielectric etc) so application of a low temperature PTFE (Teflon™) or FEP work best with OCC conductors. This is especially critical at smaller conductor sizes.

The table below shows the properties of a selection of dielectrics. Though not used as a dielectric in Atlas' cables, PVC is included for comparison purposes.

Contact Enhancer Option

To ensure the best possible connection between your system, Future Shop recommends the DeoxIT Gold G-Series contact enhancer.

DeoxIT Gold is carefully applied to the plug contacts of your cable and is a unique conditioning solution designed to improve conductivity and provide long-lasting protection on gold, base metals and other precious metal contacts and connections. DeoxIT Gold penetrates plated surfaces, molecularly bonding to the base metals to seal and protect both surfaces.

The benefits of applying DeoxIT gold are:

  • Improved Conductivity
  • Maintained optimum signal quality
  • Reduced wear & abrasion
  • Prevents fretting/dendrite corrosion
  • Forms a protective anti-tarnishing coating
  • Stabilises connections between similar and dissimilar metals
  • Reduces arcing, RFI and intermittent connections

Please select this option from the above ‘Contact Enhancer’ drop-down menu and our engineers will apply the contact solution to your cable connectors prior to shipping.

Needs Patience, but Worth the Wait!

I have waited some time to post this review. I am a bit of an Atlas cables fan, and I think their interconnects are some of the best in the world. I already have an Atlas power cable and mains block, and I have used homemade mains cables (Belden shielded cable) from the block to my Exposure pre and power amps, but I decided to purchase this as an upgrade for the pre-amp.

Honestly, when I first installed this cable, it sounded awful. I couldn't believe it! It sounded muddy and dark, and all the sparkle had gone from my hi-fi. However, I've been here before with cables, and burn-in is a real thing. I decided to leave it in the system. Thankfully over the following weeks, the sound improved dramatically, and my system is sounding better than ever.

The noise floor is very low. The bass is extended, and the sound stage is wider and deeper. Vocals and stringed instruments sound glorious, and the timing gets my foot-tapping every time! I have a feeling there is more to come. I haven't reached 200 hours of burn-in yet, which I suspect is where this cable needs to be to really shine.

If you buy this cable, be brave and patient, and you will be rewarded!

Music comes alive

I took the plunge to invest in an Atlas EOS 4DD power cord to my Isotek Aquarius plus PS Audio AC5 power chords to my pre-amp/streamer and amplification, i.e. all 4 mm conductors. I have to admit I had Futureshop's 60-day return policy in the back of my mind when ordering; however, that was back in August. These cables are staying. In my system, these cables brought more substance and presence to the music. Can't describe it exactly, real?

Thank you to Futureshop for the helpful advice and excellent service!

Balanced, neutral and amazingly clean: the fog has lifted.

Atlas EOS 4DD power cords feature a unique grounding technology (DD: ’dual drain’) which removes electromagnetic and radio frequency interference (EM/RFI) from the cable, reducing sonic overlay and distortion.

I compared two Atlas EOS 4DD power cords against two Transparent Audio Premium cords of similar value. The Transparent Premium power cords provided a balanced, rich smooth sound, with good detail.

However, the Atlas EOS 4DD power cords sounded vastly better. They were much clearer, smoother and more neutral-sounding. Not cool or warm, simply more accurate. The Atlas cords stripped away a lot of hidden distortion and ‘grunge’, allowing greater insight into the music, which sounded more lively, engaging and much more natural. Bass and treble extended further, were better defined and had a more nuanced realistic tone. Sound-stage imaging improved immensely.

By comparison, the Transparent power cords sounded thick, muddy, restrictive, coarse and dull. The Atlas EOS 4DD cords were in a different league altogether. The improvement was similar for both integrated amp (modified Audiolab 8000S) and CD player (Ayre C-5XEMP). I had no idea that my audio system and Rogers LS3/5a speakers could sound so good.

I wanted power cords that would combine well with other Atlas cables (Mavros speaker cables and Mavros RCA interconnects). I had already auditioned for a Mavros RCA interconnect and was utterly amazed. Anyway, I'm delighted with the Atlas EOS 4DD power cords, they vastly exceeded my expectations. They are incredibly cost-effective. Apparently, the Atlas Superior power cord is a step up again. But also in price. I may test it at some stage.

A special thanks to Adam Senior at FutureShop UK. He provided me with brilliant service and advice.

Very highly recommended!

Incredible results with great recordings.

My honest opinion about these cables are if you have quality equipment and use quality recordings then they will certainly open your eyes to what a cable change can make. For me where these cables excel is imaging and sound stage and the realistic sound of the instruments. It's as if the instruments are laser cut into the sound stage with very good layering. I now have just one of these straight from the wall to a Atlas EOS modular 4.0 power 6way distribution block (another great product) and all the rest are PS AUDIO AC5. I done a A & B test with both cables and for my taste, system and old and not so great CD recordings the PS Audio AC5 where clearly the better cable for me. The AC5 just loses out when it comes to sound stage, laser cut imaging and realistic sound of most instruments, but the its such a smoother more detailed sound that makes just about everything sound so much more listenable and enjoyable.

A BIG THANK YOU to Gary and future shop for allowing me to have the Atlas and PS Audio cables at the same time so I could do the comparison and return the unwanted cables without any problems. FANTASTIC service as always... First class all the way.

Happy listening folk's.

This an upgrade to the excellent Supra lorad. I'm not really qualified to evaluate a piece of wire when i've used so few of them and they dont have a sound of their own. They can only enable audio equipment to perform more, or less, close to its full potential.

In this case it's definitely more. It's on the heavy side but otherwise has an evenness of tone that brings out melodic subtleties. Most impressive is its unwavering image stability that gives a sense of real musicians playing and this confidence encourages involved listening.

Very worth buying.

A revelation!...

As per review title... a revelation! A forward note; this review is based on what this cable does for ‘my’ system (listed on review of Chord Signature speaker cable).
I am used to cable changes / demo’s etc (Interconnects, speaker, mains cables) and have tried quite a few, but never expected a mains cable to make as much audio-able difference as this has... I still cannot believe it, but now after ‘fully’ running them in, this has been like the same sort of jump you get from a good Interconnect, or speaker cable change.

I had previously upgraded to Russ Andrews PowerKord-300's (for my 3 component’s) which were truly very good indeed (virtually the same price level) and really made quite an audio-able difference / jump.
Enter the Atlas EOS 4DD!... an even bigger jump in ‘all’ the right area’s: better separation, detail, dynamic’s - at the same time keeping warmth, body, (and for want of better words) fullness of sound.
£325.00 ‘is’ a lot to spend on a mains cable, but if you have a mid to higher end system you will be truly glad you spent the money and in my opinion (with what it has done for my system sound wise) is ‘well’ worth the investment.

I cannot recommend trying these marvel’s enough and as per usual, collectively Future Shop’s help, advice and great service. One important end note; I should add that these 'really' need running in. You will (should) hear an instant improvement, but I cannot stress enough just how much better they get - too good to be true?!, try and find out for yourselves, nothing to lose, potentially a ‘lot’ to gain!

The cable is wonderful, the sound immediately changed for the better. The bass became more springy and weighty, the space became even larger, each musician on his place. Voices sound very naturally and tasty. The cable of the respected Japanese company has now moved to the pantry.

Tested for a CD player Marantz.

I bought the above to match with the Atlas EOS Modular that I had bought earlier. Great improvement in sound and vision. My CD and vinyl collection now sounds so much cleaner and smoother together with a better soundstage. My 4K TV has better picture clarity and with movies the surround sound has much better depth and power giving a sense of presence and dynamics. While it maybe said that it is somewhat expensive the improvements are there for you to see and feel without a doubt. Highly recommended.

I ordered this Atlas lead for a Marantz Blu-Ray player. The lead looks good, but more importantly there was a significant improvement in picture and sound quality, compared with the lead Marantz had supplied. I think it was well worth the money.
