AudioQuest Greyhound Subwoofer Cable

Though its combination of long legs, deep chest, flexible spine, and slender build make it an excellent hunting and racing breed, capable of reaching speeds in excess of 64 kilometers per hour (40 MPH), the gentle, intelligent greyhound would just as well spend its day simply and quietly enjoying long naps in the soft shade. Greyhounds rarely bark, are very patient, show great devotion and affection toward their families, and exhibit a surprisingly friendly attitude toward people and other dogs. But don’t be misled by their distinctly slim conformation: Greyhounds are in fact exceedingly healthy, powerful animals, and they make loyal, loving companions for people young and old.

Features :

  • Solid 0.5% Silver Conductors
  • Foamed-Polyethylene Insulation
  • Metal-Layer Noise-Dissipation System (NDS)
  • Hyperlitz Coax Geometry
  • Cold-Welded Gold-Plated Plugs
  • Grounding

Solid 0.5% Silver Conductors :

Strand interaction is the single greatest cause of distortion in a cable. Semi-Solid Concentric Packed Conductors avoid many strand-interaction distortion mechanisms. Solid-core conductors offer a complete and compelling solution to this problem.

Conductor metal quality is critical for the best cable performance. The conductor surface is the only area of the conductor with 100% current density at all frequencies. The smoothness of the conductor surface is imperative because the surface is a guide rail for the entire energy envelope. The best copper and silver conductor metals have fewer grain boundaries and low oxygen content for low distortion and high performance.

Solid conductors eliminate strand-interaction distortion and reduce jitter. Solid silver-plated conductors are excellent for very high-frequency applications. These signals, being such a high frequency, travel almost exclusively on the surface of the conductor. As the surface is made of high-purity silver, the performance is very close to that of a solid silver cable, but priced much closer to solid copper cable. This is an incredibly cost effective way of manufacturing very high-quality subwoofer cables.

Foamed-Polyethylene Insulation :

Insulation is necessary to keep the positive and negative conductors separate and to give stability to cable geometry. Insulation is also a "dielectric" because it is inside the conductor's magnetic field. Dielectrics absorb energy, which after a delay is then released in the signal, causing smearing and distortion. Better insulation reduces distortion by absorbing less energy.

Greyhound uses air-filled Foamed-Polyethylene Insulation on both conductors because air absorbs next to no energy and Polyethylene is low-loss and has a benign distortion profile. Thanks to all the air in Foamed-PE, it causes much less of the out-of-focus effect common to other materials.

Metal-Layer Noise-Dissipation System (NDS) :

100% shield coverage is easy. Preventing captured RF Interference from modulating the equipment’s ground reference requires AQ’s Noise-Dissipation System. Noise-Dissipation System prevents a significant amount of RFI from reaching the equipment’s ground plane.

AudioQuest’s Noise-Dissipation System (NDS) offers a compelling solution to this challenge by using metal-only or alternating layers of metal and carbon-loaded synthetics to effectively “shield the shield,” absorbing and reflecting the Radio Frequency (RF) energy before it reaches the layer attached to the ground.

Greyhound ultilises the Metal-Layer Noise-Dissipation System (NDS) tprevent most RFI from reaching the equipment’s ground plane.

Hyperlitz Coax Geometry :

Geometry is the physical relationship of the conductors to one another within a cable and determines a cable’s most basic electrical values (capacitance and inductance). Different cable applications have different/specialized geometry requirements, and so these applications do not merely follow a ‘one size fits all’ approach. Better geometry leads to lower levels of distortion.

In Greyhound, a perfect circle of eight negative conductors spiral around a single larger positive conductor, creating a cable with a large cross-sectional area, minimizing skin effect, and providing low resistance.

Directionality :

AudioQuest’s understanding of conductor directionality and its effect on audio performance has steadily evolved, growing stronger and more complete. All audio cables are directional. The correct direction is determined by the arrows on the plugs or cable parts.

Cold-Welded Gold-Plated Plugs :

AudioQuest specifies materials and designs each of its own connectors from the ground up, resulting in the long-lasting quality and exceptional performance you deserve. These components are crucial to the overall performance of a cable.

To provide the best possible performance for each application, AudioQuest designs each of its connectors from the ground up. These components are crucial to the overall performance of the cable. Painstaking care is taken to evaluate the highest quality materials and design for every application.

AudioQuest pays special attention to the plating it uses over its connectors’ carefully crafted base metals. Wherever possible, gold connectors are plated directly over the copper, with no destructive intermediate layer of nickel or alloy, while all silver-plated connectors are Direct-Silver plated.

AudioQuest has incorporated Cold-Weld connection technology into most of their interconnects and all prepared speaker cables..

Joining conductors to plugs requires every bit as much care and precision as any other aspect of cable manufacture. AudioQuest's Cold-Weld System uses several tons of pressure to make a near-perfect connection that ensures that the structural integrity of the conductor and plug is kept completely intact, all without the damaging effect of heat.

Cold-Welding avoids the introduction of heat and extra materials like solder, which change the character of the wire at the point of termination.

Grounding :

Sometimes there is a hum problem unless the subwoofer and AV receiver (or surround-sound processor) are attached to each other using a separate wire. If your system has a hum problem, try attaching the little spade-lug tails to the metal chassis of the subwoofer amplifier and to the chassis of the sending component. Usually, this extra wire will not be needed.

All OK, surprisingly thin but works A1

All OK, surprisingly thin but works A1

I bought an 8m Greyhound subwoofer cable to add a second sub to my AV system. It runs from a Denon AVR-X6200W receiver with two genuinely independent LFE outputs. I ran Audyssey MultEQ XT32 auto-setup after connecting the second sub then tweaked one sub distance setting (6m became 2m) and all was running absolutely fine.

It was a surprisingly thin cable but I would not call it simple given its spec. Its thinness does make it easier to tuck under the edge of the carpet and dress behind the kit.

What matters more than its size is that it works just fine - great sound and no hum or other noise is audible so the shielding and noise dissipation seems good. Bass seems more even with the second sub as Audioholics suggested (the second sub is identical to the original sub except for a 2" smaller drive unit).
It's used in a small room now but it was no longer needed in the 2-channel system across the hall due to source upgrades giving deeper and stronger bass to 25Hz main speakers - so why the heck not use it rather than sell it for a poor price?

I rated it just 4 stars purely because I have not compared it with any other sub cables - there were no glitches at all. FutureShop recommended this rather than the QED Performance sub cable - as the AQ/QED prices were comparable and the original sub uses the discontinued AQ Sub-X cable I was happy to go along with that.

FS were very helpful and this cable arrived only 1 day after the order.

I did not expect a cable of this price to be so simple ...
I bought a cable itself for subwoofer because I use 2 sub-woofers, so I wanted a cable that does not lose signal so that both get a reasonable signal. After seeing the greyhounds live .. I was sincerely disappointed. I did not mind swapping it for a range above, but they are so expensive, the prices are high. Greetings.

enfim..

cumprimentos.
